Playing video games is a whole lot of fun, and we know how easy it is to get sucked in and spend hours on a game. If you’re in a relationship, we also know how frustrating it can be to be the one who doesn’t play when all you want is to spend time with your significant other.

Well, here’s our easy solution for you: Why don’t you pick up a game controller for yourself and join in on the fun? There are lots of amazing cooperative (co-op) games out there, especially ones that we think couples might enjoy playing together. We have to be honest, though, some of these video games can be hella challenging, mind-boggling, and downright frustrating especially if teamwork is a bit lacking. But guess what? Those are also the same reasons why these games are so much fun.

Ibb and Obb

Video game available on: Nintendo Switch, PC, Linux, and PlayStation

A side-scrolling video game, Ibb and Obb is a two-player game that takes you across a “puzzle-filled world,” as its creators put it. Gravity plays a huge role in the game, and you need to both utilize and manipulate it in able to get through the levels successfully with your teammate. Speaking of teammates, teamwork is essential in this game, as some obstacles are impossible to get through without a little—and sometimes literal—push from the other.

Ibb and Obb is a nice game to play with your S.O. as you wind down at the end of a busy day.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Video game available on: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC

If you both love fantasy worlds and good battle systems, Divinity: Original Sin 2 might be the game for you. Think of it as a video game version of a traditional table-top role playing game (e.g., Dungeons & Dragons). It’s an immersive world with endless possibilities, with the freedom it offers on play styles. A game that can be played of up to four people, there are a number of characters to choose from. Do you want to be a huntsman, elf, dwarf, or undead?

A game that came out in 2017, Divinity: Original Sin 2’s graphics might not be the most impressive anymore, but there’s so much more to this game than that. Aside from the captivating story, its strategic battle system is also a favorite aspect among fans. A critically-acclaimed game, many top gaming sites have dubbed Divinity: Original Sin 2 as one of the best RPG games of all time.

Spiritfarer

Video game available on: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC

Spiritfarer might not be top-of-mind when talking about co-op games, but this deserves a spot here for this simple reason: It’s a breathtaking game, and we think you might love experiencing it together. Spiritfarer can be played by just one person, through a young character named Stella whose job is to help spirits crossover. She is accompanied by her cat, Daffodil, which can be controlled by a second player through a local co-op option.

Taking care of spirits is not an easy task, especially as your party grows and your ship, where everyone lives with you, does as well. It’s a self-sufficient ship—complete with a field, garden, coops, and industrial structures like a foundry, sawmill, and more. There’s a kitchen on board as well, because it’s your task to feed your guests daily or else they’ll go hungry and unhappy. And they’re picky eaters, too. Running the ship is a lot of work, and having a helping hand there with you going through the game’s daily grind and its big, poignant moments simply makes everything better.

Cuphead

Video game available on: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC

Gamers agree on this: Cuphead is a difficult game. It can be so challenging, that it’s on many gaming sites’ list of most difficult games of all time. That can be surprising as this is no complicated role-playing game (RPG), but it’s intense nonetheless. The graphic style is quite unique as well, with a 1930s Fleischer cartoon vibe. And true to that style, yes, Cuphead’s visuals can be a little unsettling, which only adds to the whole mood of the game.

Each game in Cuphead requires different plays. It could be a side-scrolling run and shoot game, or a static view where you have to avoid whatever the enemy throws at you, while simultaneously trying to shoot them. Even with two players, it doesn’t make the game any easier.

A word of warning: You and your S.O. should try not to get frustrated at each other, but based on many gamers’ experiences, you probably will.

Overcooked 1 and 2

Video game available on: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series

We can’t recommend Overcooked enough for a co-op video game that’s all-in-one: fun, hilarious, cute, and absolutely challenging. In Overcooked, you and your teammates (which can be up to a party of four) play chefs, in different crazy kitchens with the weirdest and wackiest formats. The floors may move, counters may suddenly slide away, or things could go up in flames. In an Overcooked kitchen, anything can happen. Order slips come in, and it’s your team’s job to get the orders out correctly and on time, or else you lose the level.

Overcooked, both 1 and 2, are so much fun, even when that includes screaming at your S.O. to throw you the cabbage from a moving platform. It can definitely get intense—like Hell’s Kitchen, but cuter.
