Join us and get #IntheZone as we reveal the highlights of Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, including the launch of the latest and greatest new cellphone in the Philippines—the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra—the other new Galaxy S22 phones, the S22 Plus and S22; a powerful new Tab S8 tablet range, including the Tab S8 Ultra; and other exciting announcements!
The Galaxy S22 range
The Galaxy S22 phones represent a subtle but significant improvement over their predecessors.
Common or shared improvements include the powerful new Qualcomm 4nm processor; new display tech, Vision Booster, which melds high brightness with dynamic tone mapping to amp up image quality across a range of lighting conditions; videography and night-photography enhancements to their cameras; and improved components including new chips (as well as better heat-dissipation and cooling capabilities to deal with any increase in heat).
Those who intend to hold on to their phones for longer might be pleased to learn that Samsung will be providing operating system updates to up to four generations. Users who prioritize personal security will be pleased to learn that the S22 series features special security features like a Samsung security platform that isolates sensitive personal data from the phone’s OS and a privacy dashboard.
Additionally, in a nod towards improving the environmental footprint of the S22 line, Samsung also announced sustainability initiatives such as repurposing used fishing nets and utilizing 100% recycled paper packaging.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra
The range-topping S22 Ultra is, for all intents and purposes, the successor to the hallowed Galaxy Note. As befits such a successor, it’s the sole member of this new lineup that comes with Samsung’s S Pen stylus, but does the past Note models better by showcasing a faster response time when used with the S-Pen: 2.8ms.
Other key features of the S22 Ultra include its 120Hz 6.8-inch screen and thinner bezels than in its Note predecessors, and a powerful camera (with a main camera set including a 108MP main, 10x and 3x telephoto, and an ultra-wide lens) that can shoot 8K video, has stabilization tools and auto framing, and is more capable when used in low-light scenarios. Additionally, the S Pen now boasts the ability to save notes directly into Microsoft Office documents and Outlook emails, and its handwriting-to-text capabilities now support up to 88 languages.
The S22 Ultra comes in black, white, green, and burgundy.
The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus
Up next are Samsung’s main flagship phones, the S22 and S22 Plus.
These phones, as always, are differentiated mainly by the size of their screens: 6.6 inches for the Plus and 6.1 inches for the plain-Jane S22. They’re also all about their cameras: they feature 50MP main snappers, 10MP telephoto lenses, and 12MP ultra-wide lenses. But Samsung also saw fit to boost these phones’ durability by upgrading both front and back glass to ultra-durable Gorilla Glass Victus Plus.
The S22 and S22 Plus can be had in black, pink, white, and gold.
The Galaxy Tab S8 lineup
Samsung also announced its new Galaxy Tab S8 lineup, comprised of the very large S8 Ultra (which is distinguished by its 14.6-inch OLED screen), the mid-sized 12.4-inch Galaxy Tab S8 Plus (which also has an OLED screen); and the 11-inch Tab S8.
These three new tablets also run on the new Qualcomm 4nm processor introduced in the Galaxy S22 phones, are also compatible with the S Pen, and can also link up with a Samsung PC in order to function as second screens. The Tab S8 and S8 Plus both come with 120Hz refresh rate displays.
The Galaxy Tab S8 and S8 Plus come in graphite, pink gold and silver. The S8 Ultra comes only in graphite.
Google Assistant support for the Galaxy Watch 4
Samsung also made a couple of other announcements, including one concerning its Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatch. Users of the Galaxy Watch 4 will soon be able to use Google Assistant on their watches—no date for this release was provided, however.
