Vivo’s latest phone, the V23, is one of the newest phones to arrive in the Philippine market–but this mobile device has a lot more going for it than just its novelty. This smartphone boasts a bunch of top-level features, including its 5G capabilities, color-changing abilities, and front-facing selfie lights, that really help it stand out from the competition.

The V23 is an imaging-centric phone, as befits a V series phone from Vivo. Have a look at our quick review of the Vivo V23 to see why it’s the latest must-have smartphone, especially for camera and selfie buffs!

Design and Form Factor

The V23 is a nicely-sized phone–just over 158mm long, 72mm wide, and 7.39mm thick (that’s for the Stardust Black model; the Sunshine Gold model, interestingly, is slightly thicker at 7.55mm). The Sunshine Gold model is also slightly heavier, at 181g versus the Stardust Black model’s 179g, but neither variant is particularly heavy.

We’ll take this opportunity to tell you about the first head-turning feature of this phone, namely the fact that the Sunshine Gold model seemingly switches colors when looked at from different angles, including blue, green, yellow, pink, and orange. What’s more, place it under UV light for a little while and it’ll reveal (for just half a minute at a time) a hidden design. Quite fascinating, and definitely a conversation starter that sets this phone apart from others.

The V23’s capacitive multitouch display measures 6.44 inches on the diagonal, and is an FHD+ AMOLED affair. It’s got a notch, albeit a minimal one, and its bezels are appreciably thin.

Vivo saw fit to equip the V23 with extra-protective Xensation Up glass, and it also does have a screen protector already installed.

Users will also appreciate the fact that this phone’s display has a 90Hz refresh rate (the standard refresh rate is 60Hz) and supports HDR10+, and that it incorporates a fingerprint scanner to boot.

The V23’s main snapper set is a three-camera module, composed of a 64MP main autofocus lens, an 8MP wide-angle lens, and a 2MP macro lens. This main camera module protrudes a little bit from the phone’s svelte chassis, making a case a necessity.

Up front is the phone’s dual-lens selfie module, contained within a small notch, and this one is another standout feature: it’s composed of a powerful 50MP autofocus main lens and an 8MP wide-angle snapper. But that’s not all, as the phone also incorporates two tiny but powerful LED lights that help illuminate user selfies or videos.

As can be expected, the V23 takes perfectly decent photos and videos, especially selfie shots and videos using the powerful front-facing camera. More demanding users will enjoy this phone’s Super Steady stabilization feature that’s accessible when 1080p video is shot at 30 frames per second.

A MediaTek Dimensity 920 processor, augmented by a Mali G68 MC4 GPU and either 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage space, or 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, powers the V23. (Note that this phone doesn’t have a memory card slot, so you’ll need to either be judicious with the files you store or invest in cloud storage solutions.)

The V23 runs Android 12 overlaid with Vivo’s proprietary and easy-to-use FunTouch OS 12. Users get to access Jovi, Vivo’s AI virtual assistant, and a whole slew of other features including an Ultra Game Mode to help gamers focus on their game and have a better gaming experience.

The V23’s powerful processor and very generous RAM allotment ensure that this phone is a beast even for gamers who play the most demanding games. We weren’t able to experience any lags or stuttering at all, no matter how hard we pushed our test unit.

Additionally, this is a 5G phone, so if you’re within 5G range you can enjoy blazing-fast internet with it.

The V23 boasts a 4200mAh battery, which is about average for this class of phone. If the 60Hz refresh rate is used, a fully charged battery can last for over a day; if the more demanding 90Hz refresh rate is activated, the battery life drops to a day if not slightly less.

The phone comes with a 44W fast-charging feature, which can take just about an hour to charge the phone to full from empty.

There you have it! The Vivo V23 is a compelling new phone that boasts some pretty unique features, from its color-shifting colorway to its front-facing selfie lighting. But that being said, it’s a really good basic phone as well, thanks to the fact that Vivo covered almost all the bases.
