The smartphone world is bursting at the seams with powerful tech brands and great phones. Even in such a white-hot market, OnePlus has cemented its reputation as one of the go-to smartphone brands, thanks to its great-value phones that boast really competitive feature sets.
The recently-launched OnePlus 9 sticks to the company’s tried-and-tested formula. It showcases top-shelf specs including a powerful camera co-engineered with esteemed camera maker Hasselblad (the Scandinavian firm famous for building the cameras used by the astronauts who went to the moon); a great screen; power features including a range-topping processor and a generous battery that can be rapidly charged; and premium design.
Let’s take a quick look at the OnePlus 9 and see what makes it such a compelling smartphone!
A standout camera set
First up (because you’re most probably most curious about it) is the 9’s camera set, which is composed of a 48MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide lens, and 2MP monochrome snapper out back, and a 16MP selfie camera up front.
But it’s the Hasselblad Camera for Mobile that’s the real showstopper here. It covers color calibration and tuning under a process called “Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad”. A new Hasselblad Pro Mode utilizes the firm’s camera sensor calibration and has also brought about a newly designed camera app interface. Additionally, this juiced-up camera boasts improved video capabilities like HDR video capture and the ability to record 4K video at 120 frames per second and 8K video at 30 frames per second. Oh, and RAW shooting is available for users who prefer to handle their own image processing instead of leaving it up to the phone.
This should be a camera set that can more than hold its own against even the likes of Apple, Google and Samsung’s esteemed cameras.
An excellent screen
The 9 boasts a bright and beautiful 6.55-inch screen that has a 20:9 aspect ratio. This makes it seem a little bit taller than many other phones, but makes it easier and less unwieldy than some other phones to use with just one hand.
This is a flat 1080p Fluid AMOLED screen (2400 x 1080 pixels, 402 pixels per inch) with a 120Hz refresh rate–a boon for those who love to watch action flicks on their phones, and especially for mobile gamers who can’t abide less capable screens. There’s an optical in-screen fingerprint sensor as well.
OnePlus saw fit to give the 9 a great set of innards. The phone is powered by a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 888 processor, and also features 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Even demanding users should be well-served by this configuration.
The 9 runs OnePlus’ OxygenOS operating system, which is based on Android 11.
We wanted to give a special mention to the battery, which at a pretty generous 4500mAh is more than capable of powering the phone for about a day given moderate usage. And if you find your 9 running low, you’ll be happy to know that this phone does feature fast wired charging through its Warp Charge feature–the 9 can be prepped for a day’s usage in as little as 15 minutes. You can also charge the 9 wirelessly, as it’s compatible with standard Qi chargers and up to 15W.
Additionally, OnePlus’ Cool Play cooling system is incorporated in the 9 to ensure that users enjoy fast and cool performance even in the thick of movie streaming and gaming.
Lastly, not only is the 9 a great phone, it also looks the part thanks to its tasteful and premium design. OnePlus’ designers meticulously crafted this phone to give it a quality feel, including through the use of high-end materials in its construction, such as Gorilla Glass in the front and at the back as well.
Fit and finish are excellent, as can be expected of a phone such as this. To ensure that the 9 stays beautiful longer, OnePlus also made it durable–thanks to features such as the aforementioned Gorilla Glass, this phone has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
The OnePlus 9 is available in two striking colorways: Winter Mist, the feature color (which showcases a gradient refraction effect that transitions from a misty hue to a luminous finish, an industry first); and the simple and refined Astral Black.
